Is It Wise to Bycot Military Industries Products ?
Could not resist commenting upon one of the issues that are being strongly advocated on various vlogs, i.e. bycotting all products from the military industries. Whereas, the Army may be held responsible as for the things done on 26 November, but as I have always said do not hate someone more than you love yourself. This boycott will neither affect the army nor the government. I will only discuss the fertilizer issue here. Pakistan needs plus of 6 million tons of fertilizer. Of this 3 million tons are produced by the military industry. Contrary to what people are trying to imply and have been saying, it has been certified as one of the best by international parties but that is another argument and I will not discuss it now. No one is forced to buy this fertilzer, but if the farmers do not buy it, as per the boycott's advice, then the farmers will experience a shortfall of 3 million Tons. This difference will have to be made up by importing the fertilzer. However, the delta between an imported bag of urea and our own is Rs 2500/-, ours being cheaper. This is exactly what the Army would want - they would simply export the surplus, earn dollars instead and much more than whatever they are earning now. It will be a windfall. In the meanwhile, the farmer will have to pay a higher price, the government will add commisssions while importing, dollar exchange will be used and there will be no revenue on imported Urea. The other main fertilzer is DAP. FFC is the only producer of it. This has an even bigger delta than urea. and has the same implication on a larger scale. Let me tell you, that there is a restriction on exporting fertilzer by the government, which would be lifted and I know, how our fertilizer is sold in the international market because we did have a surplus in 2018 due to a government oversight and were given quotas to export it. We doubled our profits. These are the unintended consequences of such an ill-thought campaign, now tell me, does it make sense? .
